The month of July means summer holidays for most of us and a chance to get away and enjoy some gorgeous sunshine. The one essential oil you simply can’t be without this month is citronella oil (cymbopogon nardus). This Ceylon variety made from the blue-green leaves has a fresh lemony aroma and is considered far superior to other varieties.

Citronella is a lovely uplifting and cooling oil which helps boost mental clarity and also brings calmness to body and mind. So, it’s the perfect oil to use in your diffuser this month. Try adding just a few drops before meditation for a really focused mind. Similarly, add one drop to some olive oil, mix well and rub onto the wrists to help keep you cool and calm through this hot and busy month.

To help you on your summer travels, place a drop on a tissue and keep in your pocket, and inhale the oil as and when needed. When on the move it not only lifts body and mind but also helps reduce stress. Also, take a bottle with you as you can use it to repel insects by placing a couple of drops in a diffuser or sprinkle around your room. It has wonderful antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, so it will help clean and clear any space or room as well. Wherever you are this month, use a little citronella oil to help purify all around you.

Mostly a safe oil but avoid during pregnancy or on young children.
