How To Design The Perfect Home Yoga Space!

Transform any space in your home into a peaceful, dedicated area for yoga - By Lucy Couser

We all know the benefits of yoga for our mental and physical health, and whilst many of us do like going to studios, it’s also good to have a space in your home to practise because many people find peace doing that too. We’re here with some inspiration on how to design the perfect home yoga space, whether you have a particular space in mind already, or we’re here to spark some ideas on where to choose and how to make it feel like the perfect area for your practice.

Choose A Dedicated Space

The first thing you should do is to choose a dedicated space! If you’re just throwing your mat down anywhere in the house, it can be harder to fully relax and unwind, as it might be cluttered or just not the optimal area to help you get the most out of your practice. So, think about the spaces in your home that are spacious, airy and comfortable for your practice.

This could be a corner of your living room or a spare room. Another space that can work really well as your dedicated yoga space if you have one is a conservatory, as it bridges the gap between the garden and your home so often you’ll be surrounded by greenery, and they’re bright and airy. If you’ve not paid much attention to your conservatory before, you may need to look into getting conservatory insulation or new blinds, as the space can get chilly in the winter and too hot in the summer, but when you regulate the temperature properly, it’s a fantastic space to utilise.

Perfect Your Lighting

Something else that can make a big difference when it comes to your yoga space is to perfect your lighting. We love natural light for yoga, as well as understanding the importance of lighting in the home related to health, so if you can choose a space near windows or doors, that’s ideal. Or, if you like very early morning or late evening yoga, then you will likely want to avoid very bright lighting, and instead go for secondary lighting that is nice and warm, like a corner lamp, lovely fairy lights around the space or a hanging feature over where you want to practise.

Go For More Neutral Decor

For us, neutral decor is the best when it comes to a yoga studio. You want to choose decor that allows the mind to fully unwind without distractions, so choose neutral colours, warm, natural woods and very slight pops of colour in the form of pastels. A calm and neutral environment is easy to establish with neutral colours, and helps you to focus on your practice and staying present throughout. So, consider this with your wall colour and then also the decor around your yoga space. If you’ve not got a whole room to work with, and you’re choosing a yoga space within another room, then you could either focus on an overall neutral palette, or just ensure that anything in your eyeline when practising has minimal opportunity to distract!

Have Some Form Of Storage

Another good tip to help you get in the zone is to have some form of storage. You don’t want to have lots of clutter around your space, as it can take away from your concentration and our brains in order to be able to function properly. You don’t want your body to be competing for attention when you’re trying to practise, so get some storage to keep your yoga equipment that you don’t need every time, and then also use it to declutter everything else from around the space. A clean and clear area to practise in can make all the difference to your ability to concentrate and get the most out of your yoga.

Get Plants!

A really simple way to bring your home yoga space to life is with plants! There are many ways that plants can benefit your yoga practice, from helping to purify the air, reducing stress, improving your mood, creating a calming atmosphere and it can also help to reduce humidity. Plus, they just look lovely. So, get a few plants, perhaps some bigger ones and then also some smaller ones and dot them about the space. The power of plants is undeniable, including as part of our home decor.
