Blossom into Your Full Potential with Taurus-Inspired Yoga

Effortlessly beautiful, blossom has a stubborn determination. You too have the ability to blossom into your full potential, however, you will need to show some stubborn determination to flower.

Fortunately, yoga inspired by the zodiac sign Taurus is here to support you on this quest. In this article I’ll share with you some Taurus-inspired yoga ideas, adapted from my Yoga by the Stars book, to help you bring your hidden talents out into the light. And remember, these practices are for everyone not just for the Taurean.

Greek, Persian, Sanskrit, and Babylonian astrologers agreed that the star group known as Taurus was a bull. It was traditionally ruled by the planet Venus and the element earth. Venus is the goddess of beauty and love. Key words are harmony, unison, relatedness.

In my Yoga by the Stars book I designed the Taurus-inspired yoga practice in Taurus' month of May, when all the trees are coming into blossom. The image of the tree in blossom was the one I held in my mind when designing the practice. Venus, the ruler of Taurus, is associated with the period of adolescence, so the image of blossoming seemed appropriate; with the underlying idea of opening, like blossom and fulfilling potential. The tree in blossom image may at first glance seem a long way from the traditional symbol of Taurus the bull. However, the stability and earthiness of the sign is captured in the rootedness of the tree. The ruler-ship of Venus is captured in the sattvic beauty of the blossom, against the backdrop of a clear blue sky.

Let’s start with our exploration with three Taurus-inspired visualisations that could easily be integrated into your yoga practice.

Beautiful Blossom Visualisation

This is a lovely way to start or end a yoga practice. Find yourself a comfortable seated position. Bring your hands together as if in prayer. Imagine that in the space between your two palms you are holding a sprig of beautiful blossom. Silently repeat the affirmation: Love blossoms with each breath.

Standing like a tree in blossom

This visualisation would be perfect to do before you go into Tree Pose (Vrksasana). Stand tall like a tree. Your feet are parallel and about hip width apart, knees soft, face relaxed, and shoulders down away from the ears. Your tailbone feels heavy as though it is weighted, and the crown of your head feels light and floats skyward. Now picture the beauty of a tree in blossom. Notice its shape, the blossom’s colour, its fragrance. Stay here for a few breaths, enjoying the beauty of the image of the tree. Silently repeat the affirmation: Love blossoms with each breath.

Blossom Petal Sequence

You begin this sequence in a Standing Forward Bend (Uttanasana) with soft knees, and become aware of your breathing. Exhale and uncurl, slowly coming back up to standing, and imagine that as you do so, your hands are drawing energy up from the earth and through the center of the body. Bring your hands into the Prayer Position (Namaste), and then take the arms up above your head, shoulder width apart. As you lower the arms out to the sides, picture that you are scattering blossom petals at the same time as lowering back down into a Standing Forward Bend. Repeat a few more times, moving in a smooth, flowing, circular fashion; pulling energy up from the earth; and giving back that energy to the earth as you scatter petals.

Now, let’s look at some Taurus-Inspired Meditation Questions, adapted from the Yoga by the Stars book, designed to help you to blossom into your full potential. You could integrate the questions into your journaling practice, turn them over in your head on a meditative walk, meditate upon a question whilst staying in a yoga pose, or simply read them through before bed and trust that your subconscious mind will come up with some insightful answers whilst you sleep.
