Accessible Yoga

Accessible Yoga: Special Report

Anyone can do yoga. Whatever your age, size or shape, there is a practice that is just perfect for you

Guess what? Everyone is different! You probably know that already, but in yoga, it’s why our individual practice looks entirely different to the person on the next mat. We’re all unique, we’re different ages, heights and sizes — it’s that diversity that makes you (and us) all so wonderful.

The beauty of yoga is that adjustments can make the practice accessible to all levels, no matter where you’re at, from first-class newbies to graceful gurus. It’s also a remarkable talent that yoga teachers seem to possess. If you’re struggling in a particular posture, they can suggest miracle micro adjustments that can make all the difference.

The use of yoga props can also open up yoga asana, creating a variation of a pose that may have been out of reach otherwise, without all those bricks and blocks. Anyone who’s attended an Iyengar class, or enjoyed Yin or restorative yoga, will know how amazingly helpful these accessories can be. Oh and those blankets too in Savasana!

So if you’re someone who’s still not sure about taking that first big step, and trying the free class offer at the local yoga studio, don’t be afraid. You’re not alone and you absolutely can do yoga. Your uniqueness is wanted — and welcomed — when it comes to yoga.
