Ever since I can remember, I've been captivated by the sun. There's a profound sense of energy that comes from basking in its warm embrace—a feeling of being nurtured and revitalised that is unmatched. In my yoga practice, I often channel this vibrant energy, drawing inspiration from Surya, the sun god, to bring light and vitality into my being.
Who is Surya?
Surya, often depicted riding a chariot harnessed by seven horses, is revered in Hindu mythology as the sun god. He is seen as the source of life, light, and wisdom, embodying the illuminating and transformative power of the sun. In Vedic texts, Surya is more than just a celestial body; he represents a divine force that dispels darkness and ignorance, symbolising the ultimate truth and consciousness.
In yoga philosophy, Surya represents the inner light within each of us. This light, or "inner sun," is a metaphor for our higher consciousness and spiritual awakening. By invoking Surya in your practice, you connect with this inner spark, fostering clarity, vitality, and a deeper sense of purpose.
In Tantra Yoga, the manipura chakra, also known as the solar plexus chakra, is associated with the element of fire and the sun's energy. Located above the navel, this chakra is the centre of personal power, self-esteem, and transformation. By focusing on the manipura chakra, you can enhance your willpower and drive, aligning your actions with your higher purpose.
Surya Namaskar: Saluting the Sun
One of the most direct ways to honour Surya is through Surya Namaskar, or Sun Salutations. This sequence of poses is a moving meditation that aligns you with the rhythms of the sun. Each movement is coordinated with breath, symbolising the cycle of life, the passage of time, and the ever-present connection between your inner and outer worlds.
Physical Benefits:
Surya Namaskar invigorates the entire body, improving circulation, flexibility, and strength.
Mental Clarity:
This practice can clear the mind, reduce stress, and enhance focus, much like the sun dispels the morning mist.
Energetic Awakening:
Surya Namaskar can activate and balance the solar plexus chakra (manipura), fostering confidence and personal power.
Connecting with Surya in Your Practice
Incorporating elements of Surya into your yoga routine can deepen your connection to this powerful energy.
Mantras:
Chanting the Surya Mantra, such as "Aum Hrim Hrim Suraya Namah," at the beginning or end of your practice can help set a clear intention and create a sacred space. This mantra is traditionally recited to invoke the sun's energy, strength, and blessings.
Themed Practices:
Design your yoga practice around the qualities of the sun, such as light, warmth, and transformation. You might include dynamic sequences to generate heat, followed by more reflective poses that honour the sun's setting, promoting relaxation and introspection.
Meditation:
Take time to reflect on what Surya symbolises in your own life. How can you harness your inner light to overcome challenges? How can you bring more clarity and energy into your daily routines? Meditating on these questions can help you cultivate a deeper, more personal connection to your practice.
