How to Raise Kundalini Safely
Understanding and Safely Awakening Kundalini Energy- By Tanishka

Kundalini has become a buzz word. Why? It's the bio-electricity of the body. So when we plug in to 'The Force' we can enjoy benefits such as enhanced energy levels, greater longevity, creativity, libido and magnetic charisma. Yes! No wonder it’s in fashion!
Essentially, kundalini* is the primal force of creation, the feminine principle. So the simplest way to access kundalini is to visualise sending energetic roots from the base of our spine and soles of our feet into the centre of the Earth and draw the energy up as a guided meditation.
This activates the Tree of Life within our energy field, known as the Shekinah (feminine principle) in the Hebraic tradition, Yggdrasil (The World Tree) in the Norse tradition, or the rainbow bridge known as the chakra (vortex) system in the Hindu tradition.
Kundalini means ‘serpent power’ because it travels through the nadis (meridians), the energy currents of our bodies. The main two nadis lay dormant at the base of our spines, but when activated spiral around each other, like copulating snakes activating our consciousness, resulting in greater self-awareness.
This is why in the creation myth of Genesis in the Bible, the serpent says to Eve, “When you taste of that fruit (from the Tree of Life) you will know things you have never known before…and know the difference between good and evil.”
Rather than fear kundalini we need to understand and respect its power so we can be responsible with it.
Just as electricity is dangerous when it's ungrounded, it can be potentially harmful if we attempt to activate our kundalini if our energy isn't grounded. (So not under the influence of substances at a Summer festival.) Once activated, it needs to be raised step-by-step just as electrical substations change the wattage so we don’t get friend when plug out toaster in at home.
One way to do this is through learning about the psychological archetypes that govern the 7 major energy centres, known as chakras, the energy vortices in our bodies. These 7 feminine and 7 masculine aspects map the yin (receptive) and yang (active) polarities in our psyche and energy field. Through becoming aware of the traits and lessons of each face of the inner God (Shiva) and inner Goddess (Shakti) we promote the flow of more life force energy.
Understanding the archetypes that when balanced form the inner harmony of union (the meaning of the word, yoga) helps us to consciously integrate the energy so we’re not overwhelmed by it and wig out, thinking we are the messiah, Mary Magdalene, or Flash Gordon! Kundalini is by its very nature intense. Its function is to purify the subtle bodies. Just as a fever is the body’s response to illness or hot flushes, the endocrine system’s liver flush during perimenopause. So if we are unstable mentally or emotionally, the intensification of energy that magnifies our experience in the present tense can be too destabilising.
So before attending ecstatic practices to ‘raise your vibe’ such as ergonomic (active meditations) including chanting, trance dance, bio-shaking, breathwork or a kundalini yoga class do be sure to get a good night’s sleep, eat a small amount of protein to ground and ensure you are not sporting a hangover or feeling hyperglycaemic.
