Birthstones have long been considered powerful in the world of spirituality, yet many people don’t know their history or what they really stand for. We’re here to introduce the power of birthstones and how incorporating them into your life or gifting them to loved ones can create a close tie with spirituality.

Where Did Birthstones Come From?

There is a lot of discussion about where birthstones initially came from, with some believing there are religious roots and others believing they have just always been more of a tradition. However, something that most discussions have in common is that they’re seen as providing the wearer with protection and power and giving them a strong connection to their celestial destiny.

For this reason, they make very popular gifts, particularly to honour important dates or significant events. Just as with star signs, different birthstones have different meanings, as each birthstone cycle represents a different individual. The stunning colours and spiritual background of birthstones have made them incredibly special in society.

What Do The Birthstones Mean?

January - Garnet

Garnet is thought to provide protection to the wearer and to guide them in the right direction, particularly providing peaceful sleep. They’re also known to encourage love, courage and faith for the wearer, reflected in the stunning deep red colour. Friendship is also an important component of what garnet represents, which is why this especially makes a thoughtful gift.

February - Amethyst

The breathtaking and mystical purple shade of the amethyst brings peace and unification to the wearer, with the lavender shade also encouraging calmness. Thought to transform negative energy into confidence, people are encouraged to wear amethysts on either wrist to help the wearer tap into their inner wisdom.

March - Aquamarine

The soothing blue tones of aquamarine represent happiness, youth and hope, bringing ultimate feelings of calm to the wearer whilst also providing courage. For sensitive souls, aquamarine is particularly special. Both a popular choice for gifts and engagement rings, the beauty of this stone is undeniable.

April - Diamond

The most precious gemstone of all, the diamond as April’s birthstone, provides strength in relationships as well as inner strength. Abundance and clarity are other benefits that come with wearing a diamond. Strong associations with love, commitment and eternal beauty are common with diamonds, which is why they are the most common choice for engagement rings. A classic pair of solid gold earrings with a diamond lasts a lifetime.

May - Emerald

The deep green, mesmerising colour of an emerald calms emotions, provides inspiration, wisdom and patience. Peace is encouraged for the wearer, enabling them to both receive and give love in a positive and productive way. The most powerful effects of emerald come when the stone is worn near the third eye chakra to increase its effects, which is the centre of the forehead; however commonly it’s worn on a pendant in line with this on the chest.

June - Pearl

A pearl is one of the most unique birthstones and is associated with purity, nature and beauty. Strong connections with the moon and water are possible, helping to direct the wearer to their desired path with luck, wisdom and love. Pearls are also associated with motherhood, and so gifting around the time of pregnancy or birth can be significant.

July - Ruby

The fierce and fiery ruby* is the birthstone of July, with strong links to love, passion and devotion. A timeless precious stone, gifting a ruby between people in love can be extremely special. They’re also thought to represent protection and enhance positive emotions. When a ruby is worn on the ring finger on the right hand, it can help to unblock the root chakra, which is responsible for security and stability.

August - Peridot

One of the lesser known birthstones, the lime green shade of a peridot brings strength, good fortune and harmony to the wearer. With a deep history in Egyptian culture and in Hawaiian folklore, it’s considered to symbolise the tears of the goddess of volcanoes and fire, Pele. Unique and stunning, this stone brings peace to the mind and body.

September - Sapphire

The exquisite stone of September is sapphire, representing fulfilment and joy. It’s also known to present loyalty and was historically worn by kings and queens to protect them from harm. Another one of the precious stones, sapphires, make a breathtaking and luxurious gift to last a lifetime.

October - Opal

The stunningly unique appearance of opals is associated with luck, magic and mystery, as no two opals are the same. The creativity and artistic nature of the wearer can be discovered when an opal is worn, to help people reach their full potential. Opals also come in so many different shades, so if you are gifting this stone, you can find something extremely unique.

November - Topaz

The stunning burnt orange tone of topaz is associated with friendship, positive energy and luck, making it a very popular option for gifting between friends. Strong friendships can be built with the positive energy of topaz, especially when worn by two people.

December - Turquoise

The green-blue tones of a turquoise bring healing, protection and success to the wearer, as well as providing balance and spiritual grounding. If worn on the pinkie finger on the right hand, additional properties of good luck and health can be released.
